Caring for the Sick in Custodial Centres
- 20% raised
- $20,000 (goal)
Prison health is public health. But inside Nigeria’s custodial centres, many inmates go without the most basic medical care.
Overcrowded cells, poor sanitation, limited drugs, and the absence of qualified medical staff make treatable illnesses life-threatening. Inmates are often left to suffer in silence — unable to afford care, with nowhere to turn.
CAPIO’s Medical Aid Programme steps into this gap. We provide direct medical support while advocating for systemic change. Our goal is to improve health conditions in correctional centres and push for stronger government response.
What we do
1. Quarterly Medical Outreach
Organize regular visits to custodial centres in collaboration with volunteer health professionals.
Deliver general consultations, vital sign checks, eye care, mental health support, and drug dispensation.
Treat over 200 inmates per outreach, prioritizing the sick, elderly, and long-term detainees.
2. Donation of Medical Supplies
Provide medications based on assessed need.
Donate clinical equipment and hygiene supplies to custodial clinics and correctional officers.
3. Sanitation and Health Advocacy
Advocate to Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for improved healthcare and sanitation services in prisons.
Highlight urgent gaps in medical staffing, water access, waste management, and infectious disease control.
4. Emergency Health Interventions
Respond to urgent cases when contacted by correctional centres.
Deliver medications and arrange care for life-threatening or high-risk conditions.
Why it matters
Inmates cannot leave to seek treatment. They rely entirely on what is available inside. When that system fails, the consequences are deadly.
CAPIO’s medical programme saves lives, reduces suffering, and prevents the spread of diseases in already vulnerable settings.
