Justice without reform is incomplete.

CAPIO’s Advocacy Programme focuses on changing the structural problems that keep Nigeria’s justice system slow, harsh, and overcrowded. We campaign for reforms that protect the rights of inmates, reduce excessive punishment, and improve correctional practices.

Our work targets outdated laws, poor enforcement of human rights, and the neglect of those left behind in the justice process  including those on death row and long-term convicts who have been denied fair hearings or meaningful rehabilitation.

What we do

1. Push for justice system reforms

• Engage government bodies, lawmakers, and stakeholders to improve criminal justice processes.

• Campaign for faster trials, non-custodial sentencing, and humane prison management.

2. Advocate for amnesty and sentence reviews

• Call for presidential amnesty for inmates on death row, especially those convicted without legal defence or after decades in detention.

• Push for reviews of long-term sentences and unjust detentions.

3. Promote correctional reforms

• Encourage full implementation of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act and compliance with international standards.

• Monitor detention practices and highlight abuse or neglect.

4. Raise public awareness

• Use media, community outreach, and stakeholder engagement to highlight the conditions inside custodial centres and the need for systemic change.

Why it matters

Reforming one prison helps a few. Reforming the system helps thousands.

Without advocacy, individual efforts  legal aid, medical care, welfare  will always be patchwork. CAPIO’s advocacy aims to fix the source of injustice, not just the symptoms.
