Wrongfully Jailed. Nearly Two Years Lost

A Young Man’s Life Interrupted

In July 2023, the quiet community of Oji River in Enugu State witnessed an arrest that would change a young man’s life.
Chidera Offorjindu, a local barber known for his skill with clippers and his easy smile, was suddenly accused of theft. He pleaded his innocence, but the justice system did not listen.

Despite having no strong evidence against him, Chidera was denied bail. From that moment, he was trapped in custody, cut off from his family, his work, and his future.

Stranded in Custody

Days turned into weeks. Weeks stretched into months. By the time he had spent a year in detention, Chidera was losing hope. He had no means to hire a lawyer, no one to defend him in court, and no way to push through the endless delays that plague Nigeria’s judicial system.

For a young man whose only dream was to build a living through his small barbing salon, life inside the prison walls was crushing. His freedom, reputation, and livelihood were slipping away.

CAPIO Steps In

It was during this dark period that CAPIO’s legal team met Chidera. Week after week, our lawyers and prison officers visit custodial centres to listen to the unheard, and that was how his story came to us.

After listening to him, CAPIO decided to take up his case. Our team immediately went to work, preparing his defense, filing motions, and standing by him in court.

The Day of Freedom

On March 6, 2025, after nearly two years in custody, the court finally struck out all charges against Chidera.
The judge agreed that the case had dragged on for too long without evidence. The prosecution could not prove their allegations, and justice demanded his release.

Chidera walked out of prison a free man.

A Second Chance at Life

Freedom is only the beginning. CAPIO does not stop at legal victories. We believe true justice means restoring people back to society with dignity and hope.

Chidera is now undergoing rehabilitation at CAPIO’s Centre of Hope—a safe space where returning citizens receive counseling, vocational training, and reintegration support. He is learning how to rebuild his life, gain new skills, and stay far from crime.

In his own words:
“God bless CAPIO. Thank you, CAPIO. I will never be associated with any crime again.”Chidera Offorjindu

Justice is Possible

Chidera’s story is one of thousands in Nigeria people stuck in prison for years over weak allegations, denied bail, and forgotten by society. CAPIO is committed to changing this reality, one life at a time.

But we cannot do it alone.

Support CAPIO’s work. Together, we can give more people like Chidera a second chance at life.
