In Nigeria’s prisons, too many people are trapped without trial, convicted without defence, or forgotten for years simply because they cannot afford a lawyer. Poverty becomes a life sentence.
CAPIO’s Legal Aid Programme gives indigent inmates a fighting chance. Our team of lawyers visit correctional centres, listen to inmates’ stories, investigate, and represent them in court. We also use Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to resolve cases faster, decongest prisons, and restore relationships. Beyond the courtroom, we fight for lasting reforms that protect human rights.
But we cannot do this alone. New cases come in daily—people jailed for petty offences, victims of wrongful arrests, men and women who deserve a fair trial but have no voice.
