CAPIO Participates in CAWIN – Capacity Building
Members of staff of CAPIO actively participated in a two-week capacity building training organized by CAWIN, held from May 12th – May 22nd , 2025. The training was designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of CAWIN’s Board of Trustees and staff in critical areas essential for effective non profit management and operations.

The program focused on three core areas: NGO Governance and Organizational Management, Programme Management, and Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL). Through a combination of interactive sessions, practical exercises, and group discussions, participants gained valuable insights into leadership roles, strategic planning, project implementation, and performance tracking.
A significant outcome of the training was the development and launch of a new website for CAWIN. This digital platform aims to increase the organization’s visibility, facilitate communication with stakeholders, and support fundraising and advocacy efforts. A strategic plan was drafted to guide the organization on the goals and objectives for next 5 years.
Participants reported improved understanding of governance responsibilities and enhanced capacity to manage programs effectively. The training also fostered stronger collaboration and communication between board members and staff, contributing to a more cohesive organizational culture.
While the training was successful, some challenges were noted, including limited time to delve deeply into complex topics and a learning curve associated with technical tools used in monitoring and website management. To address these issues, follow-up workshops and continuous support are recommended.
Overall, the training marked an important step forward for CAWIN and CAPIO in building sustainable organizational capacity, promoting transparency and accountability, and improving public engagement through enhanced digital presence.
CAPIO Empowers Oji-River Custodial Centre to Fumigate the Cells of the Custodial Centre
On receiving a formal request from the Officer In-Charge of Oji River Custodial Centre, CAPIO responded promptly to support an urgent need related to inmate health and comfort. The Officer reported that inmates were suffering significant discomfort due to insect infestations within the cells, resulting in frequent insect bites and poor hygienic conditions. Recognizing the importance of addressing this issue quickly to safeguard the well-being of the inmates, CAPIO took immediate action.
In line with its mission to promote humane treatment and improve prison conditions, CAPIO provided the necessary fumigation materials to the Custodial Centre. These items were delivered on June 9th, 2025, and included appropriate fumigation chemicals and application tools, ensuring the custodial centre was fully equipped to carry out the process effectively.
The fumigation exercise was aimed at eliminating insects and pests in the living areas to restore more sanitary and dignified conditions for the inmates. This intervention was not only important for the physical comfort of the inmates but also for preventing the spread of insect-borne diseases that could pose serious health risks in a confined environment. It also marked a continued strengthening of the collaborative relationship between CAPIO and the custodial authorities.
This support underscores CAPIO’s commitment to promoting humane treatment, addressing health-related concerns in correctional facilities, and ensuring that the dignity and well-being of inmates are upheld.

Several inmates were treated for infections and other eye conditions, while many others received prescription glasses to significantly improve their sight.
This intervention led by CAPIO greatly enhanced the inmates’ comfort and quality of life. It also highlighted the ongoing need for consistent, specialized healthcare services in custodial centres and reaffirmed CAPIO’s commitment to the well-being and dignity of incarcerated individuals.
Capacity Building for returned inmates and other vulnerable persons at Centre of Hope

The training which started on the 25th of June covers fashion and designing techniques, including sewing and garment finishing, as well as digital literacy, such as word processing, internet use, and basic computer operations. Participants have shown strong interest and engagement, with many already demonstrating progress in both areas.
While the program is still ongoing, early feedback indicates a positive impact on participants’ confidence, skill development, and motivation. CAPIO continues to provide support through mentoring and tailored instruction, with the goal of promoting dignity, independence, and improved livelihoods for all trainees.
