From Wrongful Arrest to Freedom

Uche Odo: From Wrongful Arrest to Freedom

Life Before the Arrest

Uche Odo is a widow and mother of four from Aguikpa community, Oruku, in Nkanu East LGA of Enugu State. She lives with her only daughter at their family compound. To support herself and her children, she farms and runs a small petty trade.

The Arrest

In March 2021, while on her way to the market with other women, soldiers on patrol stopped near them. Most women fled, but Uche stayed. The soldiers harassed her, forced her into their vehicle, and later handed her to the police at Idodo Police Station. She was eventually moved to the State CID in Enugu, detained for two weeks, and arraigned for receiving stolen property.

Detention Without Bail

At the Magistrate Court in Enugu, the Chief Magistrate refused her bail and ordered her remand at Enugu Custodial Centre. With no legal support, Uche remained there for over a year, awaiting trial.

CAPIO’s Intervention

During one of their weekly visits to the custodial centre, CAPIO met Uche, listened to her story, and took up her case. CAPIO’s legal team applied for bail at the High Court in Amagunze. On 30 November 2022, Uche was granted bail.

The Trial and Acquittal

Her trial began in December 2022. The state called two witnesses, and the defence also called two. After more than two years of proceedings, on 26 March 2025, the High Court found Uche not guilty and acquitted her of all charges.

A New Beginning

After four years of wrongful detention and trial, Uche Odo regained her freedom. CAPIO’s free legal services gave her a second chance at life and restored hope to her family.
