Prison walls should not strip people of their dignity.
At CAPIO, we believe that every inmate has the right to humane living conditions not as a favour, but as a matter of basic human rights. The Social Welfare Programme works to improve prison infrastructure, promote the dignity of inmates, and ensure that conditions meet international standards such as the UN Mandela Rules.
Inmates live in overcrowded, under-resourced environments, often without access to clean water, proper bedding, hygiene materials, or nutritious food. Warders also work under harsh and underpaid conditions, impacting overall prison welfare.
CAPIO addresses these challenges through advocacy and direct support.
What we do
1. Advocacy for Improved Living Conditions
Push for reforms in prison infrastructure and basic welfare provision.
Engage stakeholders to enforce minimum standards for detention centres as required under international law.
2. Provision of Essential Supplies
Distribute soap, detergents, sanitary pads, bedding, towels, and clothing to inmates on a regular basis.
Support special distributions during festive seasons or emergencies.
3. Water and Sanitation Projects
Rehabilitate and install water supply systems in correctional centres to improve access to clean water.
Provide sanitation tools and training to promote hygiene among inmates.
4. Support for Warders
Advocate for improved welfare and working conditions for correctional officers to reduce burnout and systemic neglect.
Why it matters
Inhumane prison conditions lead to disease, mental health breakdown, and long-term damage. Reform cannot happen in an environment that strips people of dignity.
True rehabilitation starts with treating people as human beings.
